Meijer’s Moves Self-Checkout To The Middle Lane

Trying a new approach to self-checkout, the 200-store Meijer supermarket chain is installing self-checkout units in the middle of its checkout lanes.
“These feature two moving belts, monitored by one checkout operator, who scans the shopping from one or the other belts, which deliver the orders to baggers at the end of each belt,” according to this TalkingRetail.com story. “The supermarket claims it is a faster and cheaper to employ one checkout operator and two baggers, rather than two checkout operators and two baggers, typical of a traditional checkout arrangement.”
