Canadian Debit Card Network Crashes Friday

Millions of Canadian consumers who have moved to debit cards instead of credit cards learned that no payment system is perfect on Black Friday, when Royal Bank of Canada debit cards wend out of service for nearly three hours. The outage began around 4 p.m. EST and lasted until about 6:45 p.m. EST, Royal Bank spokeswoman Beja Rodeck told the Canada.com news service.
“All I can say is that it was a technical glitch and we’re looking at the root cause,” she said, adding that the problem was mostly at POS systems and did not impact the banks’s ATM network. Debit cards from Canada’s other big banks also appeared not to be affected, the news report said.
Cards issued by European banks when used online cross border don't usually support AVS checks. So, when a European card is used with a billing address that's in the US, an ecom merchant wouldn't necessarily know that the shipping zip code doesn't match the billing code.
